Modern slate Retreat

Eli Yarnold Master Bathroom Remodel in Auburn

project Story

The master bathroom reflected a different era of the home’s history. Subtle details uncovered during demolition suggested the space had remained largely unchanged for decades. While it had served its purpose, the bathroom no longer aligned with how the homeowners wanted the space to feel or function. The layout felt tight, the finishes lacked cohesion, and the shower, which should have been the anchor of the room, failed to provide a sense of comfort or refinement.

Initial conversations focused less on finishes and more on experience. The homeowners expressed uncertainty about what they wanted the bathroom to look like, but they were clear on what they wanted it to be. Clean, calm, and dependable for daily use. They were looking for guidance. Someone to help translate preferences into a clear direction rather than simply execute assumptions.

The solution began with a design proposal. Through guided discussions, we worked through color preferences, material comfort levels, and long term expectations. Rather than introducing unnecessary complexity, the design direction moved toward restraint and balance. This approach ultimately shaped what we refer to as the Modern Slate Retreat. A palette centered on cool toned large format tile, soft white surfaces, and dark contrasting fixtures that ground the space visually.

With the design direction established, the shower became the focal point of the master bathroom remodel plan. Large format wall tile was selected to reduce visual noise and grout maintenance, while a linear drain system allowed for precise slope control and a clean, uninterrupted floor plane. Integrated shower niches were carefully placed to support daily routines without disrupting the overall tile layout. Matte black fixtures introduced contrast while maintaining a quiet, modern tone.

Beyond the shower, the remaining elements were intentionally understated. A streamlined vanity and sink supported the design without competing with it, while mirror placement and lighting were considered together to maximize brightness within the compact footprint. Floor tile transitions were kept minimal to maintain visual continuity throughout the room.

From a construction standpoint, the project demanded careful preparation. Given the age of the original bathroom, substrate conditions, waterproofing assemblies, and drainage tolerances were addressed early to ensure long term performance. Each phase was sequenced deliberately, allowing the finished work to reflect the clarity established during the design process.

The completed master bathroom remodel feels composed and purposeful. What was once an outdated and uncertain space is now a refined retreat defined by clean lines, controlled contrast, and reliable performance. This master bathroom demonstrates how thoughtful design guidance and disciplined execution can transform a long overlooked space into one built for modern living and lasting value.
